The Upper Mustang Trek- 15 days offers a remote terrain, Himalayan ranges, Tibetan culture, walled village of Lo Manthang in the Upper Mustang. Known as the Last Forbidden Kingdom of Nepal, the Upper Mustang trek which was open as the most popular trekking region in Nepal in the past 15-years. The trekkers before exploring the Upper Mustang, need to take a trekking permit from the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and Upper Mustang Trekking permit ( Restricted area trekking permit) from the Department of Immigration, Nepal.
The Upper Mustang is the only river valley which extends from north to south of the Annapurna Circuit. The place is highly influenced by the Tibetan culture and lifestyles. Lying under the Himalayan shadow the place holds a deserted beauty, and cliff-faced landscape. Accompanied by Lo Manthang, the overall 15 days Upper Mustang trek gives a firsthand experience of the beautiful snow peaks and Himalayan ranges of Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Mt. Nilgiri.
The 15 days Upper Mustang Trek begins from a short tour of Kathmandu valley and heads to Jomsom, the starting point of all the treks. From there, we head to Kagbeni, ascend beautiful pass Cross Taklam La pass (3624m), Yamda La Pass (3850m), Nyi Pass (4010m) and Dajori La Pass (3735m). The 15 days Upper Mustang trek itineraries prepared by Best Adventure Travels allows the trekkers to enjoy the remote trek to Upper Mustang. As the area lies in the shadow of Himalayas, hence, the best season to trek Upper Mustang is throughout the year (Summer, Winter, Spring, Autumn), however the splendid month to trek Upper Mustang is March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October and November.

The travelers can take refreshment and then enjoy the remaining hours roaming around the streets of Thamel or stay back in hotel room. In the evening, a gala welcome dinner is organized, where a brief session is conducted to introduce the 15 days Upper Mustang trek and to enjoy the lavish Nepalese spread.

Before exploring the untouched Mustang valley, we take a city tour inside the Kathmandu valley. We take a tour of Kathmandu Durbar Square, the ancient Malla palace, Kumari Gar, Kasthamandap, Baudhanath Stupa, Pashupatinath temple and finally head to Tribhuvan International Airport to board the afternoon flight for Pokhara. The approximate flight timing from Kathmandu to Pokhara is 25 minutes. On reaching we explore the lakeside area of Pokhara, local markets, take a tour of Phewa lake and return back to the hotel to prepare for the next day.

We take an early flight to Jomsom, the place is famous for apples, black stones, strong winds and rocky landscape. The scenic flight from Pokhara to Jomsom is highly pleasant as we shall be flying nearby the Annapurna ranges, Machhapuchre and Dhaulagiri ranges. The landscape we see from the flight is absolutely breath-taking. We shall land in Jomsom the headquarter of Mustang district and inaugurate the Upper Mustang trek. We begin from the open trial and walk in the barren craggy rocks in between the arid valley of Kali Gandaki river and to the fort of Kagbeni. The village of Kagbeni is beautiful flat-roofed houses surrounded by the beautiful white peaks.

Before further exploring the Upper Mustang, we need to get the permits checked. From there we take a trail alongside the flowy river of Kali Gandaki. We start the trek early in the morning as we do not want to get caught by the strong wind. On the way we see Mt.Nilgiri, and reach Tangbe village admiring its narrow alley, barley and millet fields, apple orchards and white washed houses. We walk further and pass by the trademarks of Mustang such as red sandstone pillars, and rock formations before reaching Tangbe village. We relatively walk through the apple orchards, and follow a narrow canyon to Chele, a small town along a ridge.

Our walk today is more thrilling and strenuous than yesterday. We shall cross two pass Taklam La pass (3624m) and Dajori La Pass (3735m). From Chele we ascend upwards and continue to walk on the steep canyon to Eklo Bhatti and then gradually climb up to Taklam La (3624m). Walking past we go down to Samar to take a beautiful glimpse of Mt.Nilgiri. Samar is basically a halting point of mule and horse caravans. We walk by Rangchyung Chorten’s where we shall get a magical view of Mt. Everest from Syangbochen, which is north of Jorsale.

We pass by a few houses, chortens and villages. We trek through the forests and ascend the Yamda La Pass (3850m). From the pass we descend downwards again cross forests and barley fields to reach Nyi Pass (4010m). From here we walk down to Ghami, the biggest village of Lo region. The village is beautiful as it is surrounded by fields from all sides.

From the slippery trekking trail, we shall walk towards the driest part of Mustang. We take the suspension bridge over the Ghami Khola and begin descending to the beautiful settlements filled with Mani walls. We cross the countryside filled with rough mountains and cross the Tsarang La Pass to reach Tsarang village, which lies at the pinnacle of Charang Chu canyon with red gompa and fortress. We descend downwards and then reach Tsarang habitats.

Before the uphill trek, we descend to the canyon and cross the river to reach the Lo La pass which is 3950m. On ascending the height of 3950m, we get to admire the beautiful walled village of Lo Manthang- (a most popular kingdom of Mustang which was one single state while the whole country was divided into hundreds of small kingdoms in ancient times). Adding more beauty is the stunning glow of the white peaks of Himalayas including Tilicho, Nilgiri, Annapurna I, Brikuti peak and Damodar Kunda.

Today we shall take a day off and explore Lo Mathang. The place is gripped with historical events and is a residential place of approximately 150 houses. The place is very much known for its whitewashed houses, gompas (Jampa Gompa, Thubten Gompa, Chodey Gompa and Choprang Gompa), and Kings Palace. In the evening we shall also visit Tingkat- a home of 40 people located at the north west of Lo Manthang. We explore the Lo Manthang and enjoy the beauty of rocky dunes, and white Himalayas.

From Lo-Mangthang we travel south towards Drakmar. Today for a greater experience we shall be taking a trail that passes through Gyakar village. The village is filled with century old Gompas with beautiful paintings. The Gompa holds a unique myth of fulfilling every wish of the person visiting the Gompa. We explore the Gompas and trek to Drakmar.

We shall trek through the remote and dry landscape area. The trek is almost downhill and requires a short climb to the bridge before descending to Ghami. The trail passes to dry and plain plateau before halting at Ghiling. The walk is fully energized as we might face strong wind which is almost dry. But the walk is a not to miss, as we shall get a nice view of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri ranges. On reaching Ghiling we shall explore the settlements and their regular living lifestyles.

From Ghiling we take the regular trekking trial to Chhuksang. Not missing the highlight of Ghiling, we walk to the Chungsi Cave Monastery which is built behind the vertical canyon wall. We take the same old trail of Lo Manthang, we cross two deep valleys and reach the banks of Kali Gandaki river. On the way to Chhuksang, we enjoy some of the finest view of Himalayas, and small villages.

The final day of the 15 days Upper Mustang trekking. We take the descending journey from Chuuksang to Jomsom. The walk down to the valley of Jajrkot and Khingar. As we go down the elevation drops, we take a trail alongside the Kali Gandaki river and reach the headquarter Mustang. As we shall be spending a night in Jomsom, the explorers can go the nearest landmarks, markets and eateries.

From Jomsom we fly back to Pokhara and then to take a connecting flight to Kathmandu. Trekkers wishing to stay back for a day in Pokhara are given the option of customizing the package. While the rest who wish to continue shall fly back to Kathmandu. On reaching the hotel, trekkers can either take rest or roam around the Thamel, and Basantapur area. In the evening Best Adventure Travels has planned a lavish dinner for the successful accomplishment of 15 days Upper Mustang Trek.
The 15 days Upper Mustang Trek concludes. On the final day as a final gestures Best Adventure Travels provide private shuttles to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) prior to three hours of departures.
Best Adventure Travels use Hotel Moonlight in Kathmandu and Tika resort in Pokhara. We use the best available tea houses while we are on a trek in the mountains. Our packages are on a twin sharing basis. Single supplement will be available in cities (Kathmandu, Pokhara) and partially in the mountain on request and will cost an additional USD 350.
We can enjoy Nepalese food as well Tibetan, Continental, Italian, Indian, during this Upper Mustang Trek. We will have breakfast dinners in the lodges from their menu and lunch will be provided in the tea houses while walk every day. All three meals will be served on trek and exclusive breakfast will be provided in cities like in Kathmandu and Pokhara.
